If you’re at a crossroads in your life and you’re still trying to decide on what career path to take then you’re probably also checking out different job boards to see what pays well and what doesn’t, so you must’ve noticed the different Commercial Helicopter Pilot Jobs that are posted, along with the nice salary that is offered. You’re probably wondering what it takes to become a helicopter pilot, right.
Well, there’s a long way to go from wishing to become a helicopter pilot and actually becoming one! A lot of hard work is required and a lot of money is needed to pay for all the classes as well. However, after all of that is completed and you obtain your Commercial Rotorcraft License and land one of the Commercial Helicopter Pilot Jobs available, you’ll be making much more than what you spent to become a pilot.
If you’ve decided you want to fly a helicopter for a living then you have another choice to make. You have to decide if you want to take a civilian career, or a military one. The Commercial Helicopter Pilot Jobs posted on different job boards are not for military pilots, but military pilots will receive jobs from the army. However, keep in mind that you will have other duties and responsibilities as well, if you decide to become a military helicopter pilot.

Commercial Helicopter Pilot Jobs – Civilian Careers
If you want to follow a civilian career as a pilot then the posted Commercial Helicopter Pilot Jobs are what you’ll be looking at. You must first obtain your Commercial Rotorcraft License, and possibly your Certificated Flight Instructor’s license. You can also obtain your instrumental rating, if you desire, as it is required for some jobs and it also makes you a better pilot, so there’s no harm in getting it.
Now we’re getting to the interesting, and expensive part: flight lessons. Before you can get any of the licenses mentioned above you must have the required number of ground and flight lessons. These are not cheap, and you can expect to pay anywhere from $150 to $200 per flight hour with an instructor. Ground lessons are cheaper, but they’re still around $40 per hour. Add up the number of hours required and you’re looking at a cost of $10,000 to $15,000 to get your Private Pilot’s License. However, before you can start looking at Commercial Helicopter Pilot Jobs you also need to get your Commercial Rotorcraft License. This requires an extra 150 hours, at minimum, so you’re looking at another $20,000.
Commercial Helicopter Pilot Jobs – Getting Hours
There is another thing that you will notice quite quickly if you read any of the Commercial Helicopter Pilot Jobs posted: they all require a minimum number of flight hours that is quite high. Most require somewhere around 1000 hours, and paying for all of them is certainly not practical as it’s very expensive. The easiest way to add up flight hours is by becoming a flight instructor, and you need to have a minimum of 200 flight hours before you can start teaching others how to fly.
The good part is that you’ll also be getting paid to teach others, so you’re not only getting flight experience, but also money. After you have 1000 hours of flight time you are finally ready to handle any of the numerous Commercial Helicopter Pilot Jobs available. Yes, the costs are high, as they can add up to nearly $50,000, and the work is hard, but becoming a pilot and knowing that you can successfully fly a helicopter and make money with Commercial Helicopter Pilot Jobs is a reward that is worth it!
